Registration

Registration fees fund the work of Ahpra and the Medical Board of Australia (MBA) to keep the public safe. Each Board in the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme is responsible for meeting the full cost of regulating their profession, as there are no government or other subsidies to support this vital role.

Medical registration and application fees fund:

managing applications for registration, including complex applications from internationally qualified practitioners
developing professional standards that guide the profession and set expectations
accrediting programs of study that lead to registration and endorsement, and contributing to the funding of accreditation of intern training positions via the Australian Medical Council and the state-based intern training accreditation authorities
investigating and managing concerns about registered health practitioners, including taking immediate action and referring matters to tribunals
criminal prosecutions for breaches in advertising and use of title
funding the work of the Health Ombudsman in Queensland
maintaining the public register
funding practitioner health services, and
funding the National Health Practitioner Ombudsman.

*Payment of both an application fee and a registration fee is required at the time of application.

Please note that:

There are no fees for the registration of students.

There is no application fee to change registration type to ‘non-practising’.
Only one fee for annual renewal of registration applies to general registrants and specialists. A medical practitioner who holds both general registration and specialist registration is required to pay only the fee for annual renewal of general registration.
Medical practitioners with general and specialist registration are only required to pay one late renewal fee.
Individuals who are required to apply for an international criminal history check from an approved supplier, will be responsible for the cost of the check.
