The role of the Australian Medical Council

The Australian Medical Council (AMC) is the medical accreditation authority in Australia.

The AMC verifies the medical qualifications of all IMGs seeking registration in Australia. Before you start on a pathway to registration in Australia, you need to apply to the AMC for primary source verification of your medical qualifications.

All IMGs must have a primary qualification in medicine and surgery awarded by a training institution recognised by both the AMC and the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS). The AMC maintains a list of eligible medical schools and their primary medical qualifications.

The AMC assesses IMGs on the Standard pathway through AMC exams. It does not assess IMGs on the Competent Authority pathway or SIMGs on the Expedited Specialist pathway or the Specialist pathway.

The Medical Board processes applications for medical registration and grants registration. The AMC is not involved in the registration process.

Primary source verification

All IMGs seeking medical registration in Australia need to have their medical qualifications verified. Primary source verification is mandatory under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law as in force in each state and territory.

The AMC verifies qualifications through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) MyIntealth/Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (EPIC).

Further information is available on the AMC website and on the ECFMG website.
